[ this is actually the second time that rose has tried to contact the doctor via private messaging, as the first time she tried rose wasn't sure it was him. buuuuut dialing the same contact again brought her right back here, so! onwards, then. ]

Right, so I'm just gonna assume this is the Doctor—and if it is, then you'd do well to put up a greeting, y'know. How else is anyone gonna know it's you?

[ weird how she sounds a bit like her mother, even though the teasing is as affectionate as she can make it given the circumstances. as she continues, her confidence starts to waver. she feels a little silly doing this, even though the doctor's someone she could always rely on, no matter what face he's wearing.

this time is different, but... she really doesn't want it to be. if nothing else, they can still be good mates, right? ]

But uhm... I volunteered for this... sort've district watch program and it's rather boring walkin' around all by meself. Rose is a part of the past, always has been a firm part of it. No matter how much this place puts that in a less... secure place, the Doctor never thought he would see her again, ever. It never crossed his mind, he didn't allow himself to because what if she didn't and he would have been left with this hovering hope that one day she would. That he could see her again, get something like a second chance.

It's scary because he doesn't look back, he never does. But in the shape of Rose and his previous incarnation there is suddenly his past, staring him right in the face, talking to him. Rose and... Ten, are like personifications of his past, the past he keeps locked behind a door for most of the time until he needs to bring something out.

The thing is, the Doctor doesn't work through things, he never has. He drops things like they're hot coal and then he runs, runs from that and to something else. Because otherwise it hurts too much. It's useless to linger on the past because you can't interfere with your own timeline anyway, Time Lords know this very well, so what's the point?

There is no point.

But that won't change that Rose is here, and another Doctor is here, and he has to face that but he can't. And there are moments where he has thought that he should try, should do something with it because what's the point if he doesn't? It's just so difficult.

And now Rose is calling him, reaching out, when she's struggling too. Not in the same way he is, but still struggling.

When it really comes down to it, they're always the ones reaching out, not him. He doesn't reach out, not really - he offers them all of time and space, brings them along, grabs them, doesn't just offer them to take his hand. And then they wiggle their way into his heart and soul and stay there until it burns and tears at him and makes everything infinite times more beautiful and wonderful.

He takes a breath. To center himself. His response is cheerful, quick, casual. No point in showing any of it. ]

You assume right! What, you mean that kinda greeting you humans put up where you go "leave a message after the beep"? Never crossed my mind - never really had a phone before, not like this.

It's exactly as he said.

[ But, fine, he'll explain it. Deep breath. ]

After I regenerated into Ten, we landed on Earth right before an invasion from a species called the Sycorax. Regeneration always has some sort of... consequence, such as... knocking me out, or giving me a craving for apples that I turn out to hate and eventually ends up in fish fingers and custard, and that one knocked me out. So when I finally woke up, with the help of tea, the Sycorax had taken the TARDIS onto their ship and to get them away I had to challenge their leader to a duel.

He cut off my hand, but thanks to my having only recently regenerated a lot of that energy was still in my body so I was able to grow a new hand. I saved the one that got cut off and a decent time later... A few years? I got shot by... a Dalek. It was a Dalek, yeah. But rather than regenerate, I redirected the energy into the container that held my hand, and when a friend of mine touched that, it created Theta. Half human, half Time Lord, but in a different way than River and with all my memories.

We need to find Freya. I know Odin says we need to revive Freyr, but until that happens, Freya is out there grieving. Apparently her grief is what caused the, ah...interesting events in the few days I've been here.

He says they've been looking, but Freya would know that. I would think that she'd go somewhere where they wouldn't look because they wouldn't expect it of her.
