But it speaks a great deal of what sort of man you are.

You're going about it the wrong way, that is what makes you a person that can't be trusted.

The wrong way? Does this mean I get a lecture in survival now? Fuck off. You have no idea what I've survived.

And you trusted me just fine until Oswin came into it, which makes it look a lot less about me.

I trusted you until you threatened her. Let me guess, you've survived a great deal of suffering, haven't you? Well, you're not alone. People suffer, they always suffer. That doesn't mean you all have the right to threaten people for saying something you don't like to hear. There is a right and a wrong way.

You don't hurt people, you don't go seeking violence or looking for revenge. Because all that does is lead into a downward spiral of pain and suffering, the very thing you've probably been fighting back your whole life. You suffer, and you pull through and you become a stronger and better person because of it, and you make sure that as few as possible suffer like you did.

An eye for an eye is a lie, John, an ugly, terrible lie.

And I called it.

You have no idea how my entire world works, either. It's not eye for an eye - it's kill or be killed. Violence comes right to your door whenther you want it or not. And the ones who sit around and wait to be provoked, because they think they're doing what you say? Being the better person, trying to make less people suffer? They end up bringing on the most suffering of all.

Maybe there's something your massive genius brain doesn't understand, Doctor. Consider that for awhile.

And right there is an example of what I just said. I'm telling you that I really don't think it's always been like that, and it's only because people grow up believing that's the way it has to be that it still is that way. I'm sorry to hear it, but eventually people are going to get tired of it, and that's when it'll change. That's when it'll get better.

And something else. This isn't your world, and not everyone's going to put up with what you think is right only because you grew up with it. It's not kill or be killed here, even if we're at war. Haven't you noticed? I suggest you adapt. A bit of caution's never hurt anyone, but too much of it certainly has.

It'll be made better. 'Cause some of us are already tired of it, and we're not gonna sit back and wait for peace anymore. Diplomacy's failed, whether they get it yet or not.

[He shakes his head, laughing humourlessly.]

It's not like we're that different. You need people to earn your respect - I need them to earn my trust. And Oswin has, so this whole thing is still a huge waste of air.

[ He closes his eyes. ]

You're in for a messy ride, then.

And it's not all about Oswin. She's not the only person here and believe it or not, I care for everyone. Just watch your step.

I answer to one person here, and you're not him. So I won't be taking your orders.

I will be around to call you on your shit when you fail this badly again, though.

It's not an order, it's a piece of advice. I don't need you to call me on anything, I think it's quite obvious that I have my friends to do that for me.
