[ There's a good while of silence, aside from the rustle of a paper, like a page being turned. ]
Oh, yes, right! Hello! How do I do one of these voicemails things again?
[ Another bit of silence, and then he clears his throat. ]
You've reached the Doctor - the eleventh, to be exact. Leave a message and I'll get back to you, promise!

Rose is a part of the past, always has been a firm part of it. No matter how much this place puts that in a less... secure place, the Doctor never thought he would see her again, ever. It never crossed his mind, he didn't allow himself to because what if she didn't and he would have been left with this hovering hope that one day she would. That he could see her again, get something like a second chance.
It's scary because he doesn't look back, he never does. But in the shape of Rose and his previous incarnation there is suddenly his past, staring him right in the face, talking to him. Rose and... Ten, are like personifications of his past, the past he keeps locked behind a door for most of the time until he needs to bring something out.
The thing is, the Doctor doesn't work through things, he never has. He drops things like they're hot coal and then he runs, runs from that and to something else. Because otherwise it hurts too much. It's useless to linger on the past because you can't interfere with your own timeline anyway, Time Lords know this very well, so what's the point?
There is no point.
But that won't change that Rose is here, and another Doctor is here, and he has to face that but he can't. And there are moments where he has thought that he should try, should do something with it because what's the point if he doesn't? It's just so difficult.
And now Rose is calling him, reaching out, when she's struggling too. Not in the same way he is, but still struggling.
When it really comes down to it, they're always the ones reaching out, not him. He doesn't reach out, not really - he offers them all of time and space, brings them along, grabs them, doesn't just offer them to take his hand. And then they wiggle their way into his heart and soul and stay there until it burns and tears at him and makes everything infinite times more beautiful and wonderful.
He takes a breath. To center himself. His response is cheerful, quick, casual. No point in showing any of it. ]
You assume right! What, you mean that kinda greeting you humans put up where you go "leave a message after the beep"? Never crossed my mind - never really had a phone before, not like this.
[ Nonsensical talking. It's distracting, comforting, like a blanket, not only for others but for him too. ]

the doctor is someone special to her and he always will be, if her leaping from universe to universe is any evidence to that at all. moreover, she's still very much in love with him—or at least, the him that she knows from her own time. she'd never pursue it here, nor would she ever bring it up, not when the circumstance is how it is and things between them have shifted and broken this violently. all the more reason that rose would rather remain in the dark about her future than have any of her worst fears confirmed. she sees her doctor again, and for right now, that's all she wants to know, as it gives her some hope for what's waiting for her when she finally gets back.
even so, this man is the doctor, and above all, spent a lot of time with her being her friend more than anything else. that's all she wants: to be his friend and get to know him. even if her doctor never shows up here, that would be fine.
she falls into the act well enough, laughing slightly and rolling her eyes. this is easier on her, easy to pretend, at least for the moment. ]
Well, it's not even a mobile, is it? It's just some pretty bracelet they gave us all. [ beat; she chuckles ] But I'm serious about the message, because some people are easily confused. Even if it's just a simple "I'm off being brilliant somewhere, I'll get back to you later."
( voice! )
Maybe she's just that kind. Doesn't want to just leave him. He is, after all, very much still the Doctor. She's been through this once already, sort of.
But it's just... complicated, difficult, different.
He hates it. ]
But it is a phone. And a map. Aaand something that you could find on the internet, actually. More like the internet than a phone, but without the actual world-wide thing.
[ But, yes, some people are easily confused indeed. ]
All right, then. I can manage a "I'm off being brilliant".
Sigyn, right? I'll meet you outside the Hall.
( voice! )
nothing wrong with that.
it's way more complicated than she's making it out to be, and she knows it, but she wants things like this to be simple! simple things are easy to figure out. simple things don't keep her up at night, worried and concerned for things she hasn't yet figured out.
simple things, like him agreeing to a silly little message at her prodding, keep her laughing. that's all she wants out of life, really. to have adventures and laugh along the way. ]
You sure about that "world wide" thing? I mean, it covers the whole of this world, right? And I don't wanna shock you or anything, Doctor, but I'll have you know that some of the mobiles back home could access the internet too.
[ if this was video, he could see her absolutely cheeky grin. see, this is simple, pretending everything's hunky dory and ignoring everything else that makes it not. ]
Good! I'll try calling back at some point in the future to make sure you're not windin' me up. I'll see you in a bit, then.
( voice! )
And he supposes he should expect it from Rose. He knows her, after all, doesn't he? Even if it's difficult to find all of it as he is right now. He used to know her; he can do it again, if he gives himself a bit of time to figure it out. Manages to make himself give him that time.
Bit of a snort. ]
I know they have internet. Also, the bracelet doesn't work outside the city, so, not world-wide, yet. Although it's not a phone or the internet, is it? It's just a...
A communicator!
[ Content, he decides the matter is settled. ]
( voice! )
at that, rose has to concede to the doctor's decision that the matter is settled, though not before laughing at his indignation. ]
Right, right, it's a communicator, but my point still stands! [ a beat ] Also, hope you don't mind, but we're gonna have some company with us today. Turns out that sheep doesn't wanna let me out of its sights even for a second.
( voice! )
Don't laugh at him, geez! ]
Not at all. I like sheep. Especially sheep that like Rose.
